What affects the price of diamond jewellery?

10K White Gold Round Diamond Anniversary RingThere are a few factors that determine the price of an item of jewellery. The first and most important factor is the quality of the diamond used; this depends on something known as ‘the four C’s’. The C’s represent Carat, Cut, Clarity and color.

The carat of a diamond is associated with its weight, the larger the diamond the more expensive it will be. The cut of the diamond determines how well the diamond reflects light, small cuts or facets are made in the diamond which allow it to disperse light more effectively, the quality of these cuts are associated with the time and workmanship that is put into sculpting the shape of the diamond, so the higher the quality of cut again the more expensive the piece.

A diamond of high clarity represents a diamond that has no or few inclusions. Inclusions are tiny fractures within the structure of the diamond which affect how well the diamond sparkles. Diamonds can differ in color due to their chemical formation and as such diamonds can be obtained in many different colors.

Some colors are rarer than others and pink is the rarest of all only being produced in one mine in the world apart from this color you will find that a clear diamond will set you back the most.  Other factors that will affect the price of the piece will include the manufacturer the higher the quality of manufacturer the more you will be expected to pay.

Styles of diamond jewellery

Black and White Diamond Engagement RingThe style of jewellery that a diamond can be set in can vary endlessly however there are common shapes that diamonds are shaped into. The most common cut of diamond is the ‘round brilliant’, no doubt you will have seen someone wearing this style of cut, they are round in shape and this style accounts for more than 75% of diamonds sold worldwide.

Another type of cut is the ‘oval’, this is surprisingly oval in shape and can give the effect of longer fingers when set in rings. ‘Marquise and pear’ cuts are similar to the oval however ‘Marquise’ cuts are shaped to points rather than being rounded whilst the pear cut it pointed at one end, similar to the shape of a teardrop. A ‘heart’ cut is again based on the oval cut but has a cleft at the top. The emerald is different to all of the above mentioned as it is of a rectangular or square shape.

What to consider when buying diamond jewellery

Always ensure that the provider of the item includes a certificate of authenticity with the piece as this will clarify information such as the four C’s as mentioned above. As these pieces usually result in large sums of money being spent ensure that the piece is right for you or your significant other, and try to ensure the retailer has a returns policy just in case you’re not completely satisfied with your diamond jewellery.
